Motor Parts and Accessories

Motor parts and motor accessories include products such as motor seals, commutators, laminations or laminated cores, carbon brushes, and electrical contacts. A motor seal is an electric motor part that provides a barrier between the motor and the fluid in the hydraulic reservoir or well. These motor parts and accessories transfer the torque that the motor generates and absorbs the downward thrust generated by the pump. Motor seals also allow the motor oil to expand and contract during motor operation. The motor seal drain line protects the motor and shaft seal by allowing oil from the motor housing to return to the hydraulic reservoir with minimal back pressure. Although hydraulic seals such as motor seals are generally reliable, products may fail due to excessive back pressure, high speeds, or pressure spikes. Improper remote valve synchronization and the dislodging of the return line quick coupler are common causes of pressure spikes.

Carbon brushes are motor parts and accessories that are used to transfer electrical current from a rotating object to a stationary one. Optimal performance can be achieved only if the carbon brush, brush holder, and contact surface are maintained properly. Carbon brushes are manufactured under many different trade names and include several basic types of products. Pitch-bonded, resin-bonded, electro-graphite, and silver-impregnated carbon brushes are commonly available. Carbon brush holders provide stable support in relation to the contact surface and often apply the contact force on the brush. Like many motor parts and accessories, carbon brushes are made of brass or other metals. The fit of the carbon portion of the brush in the holder is critical for stable electrical contact. If there is inadequate space between the holder walls and the brush, there is potential for binding of the brush in the holder.

Motor parts and motor accessories are used in a variety of applications and industries. Some products are used in household appliances, machine tools, or generators. Others are designed for automotive, aerospace, or military applications. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) maintains and publishes standards for many different motor parts and accessories. Motor parts and accessories that meet U.S. military specifications have a MIL-SPEC or MIL-STD designation.
