NEMA Rated
Starter sizes refer to a standardized rating system for electrical performance. The NEMA size ratings are categorized by the continuous current rating and horsepower at the rated voltages.
| |
IEC Rated
The IEC sizes are rated at the thermal current rating (the current the contactor can withstand without overheating) or the operational current (the capability of the contactor to make and break the current under different IEC Utilization Categories. eg. Utilization Category AC-1).

Continuous Current:
Continuous current is also called continuous ampere rating. Typically, a manufacturer will list the NEMA size and the Ampere Rating for that size.

Control Voltage (Separate Control):
The control voltage, if different from the Motor Voltage. This is called "separate control" and means that the control circuit gets its power form a separate source, usually lower in voltage form the motor's power source.

Overload Protection:
| |
Your choices are...
| |
Eutectic
Eutectic overload relays consist of a eutectic (melting) alloy and a heater coil. When an overload occurs, the heater coil heats the eutectic alloy tube. The heat melts the alloy tube attached to tripping device, initiating a switching action.
| |
Bimetallic
A bimetallic device is made of two strips of different metals that are permanently joined together. Heating the strip causes it to bend because the metals expand and contract at different rates. The strip is attached to a spring on a contact. As the strip bends, the spring pulls the contacts apart, breaking the circuit.
| |
Solid State
The solid-state relay measures current or a change in resistance instead of generating heat to facilitate a trip. The solid-state relay also provides advanced functions (i.e. ambient temperature sensing, programmable trip time and detecting changes in current).

Additional Features
| |
Your choices are...
| |
Low Voltage Protection
If the line voltage drops or fails, the contactor will latch open and stop the motor. It must be manually reset to restart the motor.
| |
Phase Failure (Loss) Trip
If power fails is one wire of a polyphase circuit, power is interrupted in all the wires.
| |
Phase Reversal (Unbalance) Trip
If phase rotation reverses in a polyphase circuit, power is interrupted in all wires of the circuit.
| |
Multi-Speed Starter?
Multi-speed starters are designed to be operated at constant frequency and voltage.
| |
Reduced Voltage Starter (RVS)
Reduced voltage starters (RVS) use motor windings that may be reconnected to form different numbers of poles to change speed. It is designed to be operated at constant frequency and speed.
| |
Reversing
Reduce voltage starters are used when there is a need to avoid overloading the power distribution system (utilities impose limits on the amount pf power their customers may draw at any one time) or to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on equipment by reducing starting torque. The five main types of Reduced Voltage Starters are Primary Resistor, Autotransformer, Part Winding, Wye Delta and Solid State.
| |
Full Voltage Non-Reversing Starter
Full-voltage non-reversing starters are designed with two contactors (one for forward direction and one for reverse) and an overload relay. The contactors are mechanically and electrically interlocked.
| |
Manual Starter
Manual starters are the most commonly used general purpose starter. These starters connect the incoming power directly to the motor and are particularly suitable for squirrel cage motors. They can be used in any application where the motor runs in only one direction, at one speed and where the draw of inrush current at start up is not a concern.
